Natural landscaping uses colorful native plants, bushes, and trees that manage rainwater while beautifying your yard and promoting a healthy landscape that creates a habitat for local birds, bees, and butterflies. Native plants have deep growing root systems that help break up the soil, allowing more water to drain into the ground. With reduced irrigation needs and higher survival rates during drought, you might find yourself buying fewer replacements each year and saving money on water bills. In addition, you will also use fewer chemicals to eliminate pests and promote growth, and that leads to cleaner water and cleaner air for you, your children, pets, and neighbors. We'll explore four types of natural landscaping: prairie, savanna, woodland, and wetland. We'll also outline how to plan an urban natural landscape with recommended enhancements and steps to follow for success.
Our speaker, Jean Akhter, has been a Master Gardener for 12 years. This is her second year on the Board of Directors for the Southeast Wisconsin Master Gardeners (SEWMG) and her second year as Co-Chair for the SEWMG Speakers Bureau. Jean is an avid gardener and an enthusiastic proponent of gardening with native plants.
This is a FREE event but you must register in advance!
We will also offer a tour of the Ten Chimneys Estate after the presentation at approximately 10:45 am. The cost is $35 for the Full Estate Tour and $28 for the Main House Only Tour. Reservations are required.
