Stephen McKinley Henderson
Join us at Ten Chimneys for A Conversation with Stephen McKinley Henderson on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 7pm. This evening of fun and conversation will have Stephen sharing stories of his life and career, along with a question and answer session at the end.
Stephen's glowing performances cover stage, film, and television. He is considered one of the top 32 character actors in the country, and has performed throughout the United States and abroad, on Broadway and off, and is recognized as a signature performer of August Wilson's work. His trademark August Wilson role is the gossipy Turnbo in Jitney. He received a Tony nomination for his work in Fences, starring along side Tony Award winners Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.
On stage, Stephen has also played Pops in Between Riverside and Crazy (the play which received the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Drama) and was awarded the Obie and Lucille Lortel awards as Outstanding Lead Actor. He revived the role in 2022-23 and was nominated for a Tony as Best Actor. He also appeared on Broadway in Dracula - the Musical, Drowning Crow, King Hedley II, and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (with Charles Dutton and Whoopy Goldberg) among others. We are delighted to announce that Stephen will be inducted to The Theater Hall of Fame for Lifetime Achievement on November 18th!
Most recently you will have seen him on the big screen in Dune and starring in Civil War. Dune is one of six Oscar nominated films he has been in, others being Lady Bird, Manchester by the Sea, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Stephen Spielberg's Lincoln, and Denzel Washington's Fences.
Noteworthy television work includes Halle Berry's directorial debut, Bruised for Netflix, the FX/HULU series Dev, HBO series Everyday People, PBS American Playhouse film A Raisin in the Sun (starring Danny Glover and Esther Rolle), and Wu Tang: An American Saga. He had a reoccurring role for 15 seasons as a judge on NBC's Law & Order and was a co-star on the FOX series New Amsterdam. In addition, you will see his work on Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Tyler Perry's House of Paine, Third Watch, and Blue Bloods.
In addition to receiving numerous awards throughout his extensive career for specific works, he also received the Lucille Lortel Award for Lifetime Achievement and the Harold Prince Lifetime Achievement Award from the Drama Desk Awards in 2023. In 2024, The Acting Company honored him with the John Houseman Award.
